Defining the Size: Paper Transformation

In order for Odyssey to know how many sheets of paper is needed at each process for the Workflow at the job level, a user will need to ensure each Media or Component input in the product workflow has the 'Needed' and 'Per Units' fields filled out.

Odyssey has a built-in 'Paper Transformation' tool that will auto-calculate the number of sheets needed for each process based on the finished size of the product after the product has gone through the process.

Example of needing to use the 'Paper Transformation' tool: An online order is placed for 2000 brochures, the final size being 8.5 in. x 3.66 in. There are six processes for this workflow: Cut Parent to Run Size, File Prep, Digital Printing, Trim Press Sheet to Finished Size, Tri-Fold, and Final Quality Check. Within each media or component input for the needed process, we'll use the 'Paper Transformation' tool so that Odyssey can determine the number of sheets needed for each process in the workflow.

Adding Paper Transformation to the 'Cut Parent to Run Size' process

  • Select a Product Workflow
  • Select the first process 'Cut Parent to Run Size'
  • Select the Media input 'Generic Paper'
  • Select the calculation button to the far right of the resource
  • Select 'Per Quantity'
  • Select a resource from the drop-down below 'Quantity From'
    • The resource chosen would be the '(Component) Unprinted Press Sheet' in the drop-down
  • Select 'Paper Transformation' below the 'Minimum' field
    • The Original size (of the parent sheet) is already filled in based on the attributes provided for said parent sheet.
  • Enter in the Finished Size (Width & Length)
    • The Finished Size would be considered after this process is complete, the paper size needed for the next process.
  • Select 'Save'
    • User will see 1 'Needed' for 2 'Per Units' meaning 1 sheet of paper will contain 2 products or 2 finished pieces
  • Select 'Add'
    • Odyssey will add this calculation to the list of all other calculations for the workflow
  • Select 'Close' to close out of the calculation section for the input process
  • Select 'Close' to close out of the 'Cut Parent to Run Size' process

Adding Paper Transformation to the 'Digital Printing' process

  • Select the second process 'Digital Printing'
  • Select the component input 'Unprinted Press Sheet'
  • Select the calculation button to the far right of the resource
  • Select 'Per Quantity'
  • Select a resource from the drop-down below 'Quantity From'
    • The resource chosen would be the'(Component) Printed Press Sheet' in the drop-down
  • Select 'Paper Transformation' below the 'Minimum' field
    • The Original size (of the parent sheet after it was cut) is already filled in
  • Enter in the Finished Size (Width & Length)
    • The Finished Size would be considered after this process is complete, the paper size needed for the next process.
  • Select 'Save'
    • User will see 1 'Needed' for 2 'Per Units' meaning 1 sheet of paper will contain 1 product
  • Select 'Add'
    • Odyssey will add this calculation to the list of all other calculations for the workflow
  • Select 'Close' to close out of the calculation section for the input process
  • Select 'Close' to close out of the 'Cut Parent to Run Size' process

Adding Paper Transformation to the 'Trim Press Sheet to Finished Size' process

  • Select the third process 'Trim Press Sheet to Finished Size'
  • Select the component input 'Printed Press Sheet'
  • Select the calculation button to the far right of the resource
  • Select 'Per Quantity'
  • Select a resource from the drop-down below 'Quantity From'
    • The resource chosen would be the'(Component) Trimmed Press Sheet' in the drop-down
  • Select 'Paper Transformation' below the 'Minimum' field
    • The Original size (of the printed press sheet after printing) is already filled in
  • Enter in the Finished Size (Width & Length)
    • The Finished Size would be considered after this process is complete, the paper size needed for the next process.
  • Select 'Save'
    • User will see 1 'Needed' for 1 'Per Units' meaning 1 sheet of paper will contain 1 product
  • Select 'Add'
    • Odyssey will add this calculation to the list of all other calculations for the workflow
  • Select 'Close' to close out of the calculation section for the input process
  • Select 'Close' to close out of the 'Cut Parent to Run Size' process

Adding Paper Transformation to the 'Half Fold' process

  • Select the forth process 'Half Fold'
  • Select the component input 'Trimmed Press Sheet'
  • Select the calculation button to the far right of the resource
  • Select 'Per Quantity'
  • Select a resource from the drop-down below 'Quantity From'
    • The resource chosen would be the'(Component) Finished Product' in the drop-down
  • Select 'Paper Transformation' below the 'Minimum' field
    • The Original size (of the trimmed press sheet) is already filled in
  • Enter in the Finished Size (Width & Length)
    • The Finished Size would be considered the size of the final product after this process is complete.

Viewing a Job Workflow with Paper Transformation applied

Continuing on with the above example, let's apply the product workflow to a job. When viewing the below screen capture, we can see that Odyssey is calculating the following number of sheets:

  • 614 sheets are needed to cut the parent size of 19" x 25"- this is for the 'Cut Parent to Run Size' process
  • 1027 sheets are a result of cutting the parent sheet down to 19" x 12.5"
  • Those 1027 unprinted press sheets are then printed during the 'Digital Printing' process
  • Those same 1027 sheets are trimmed to the finished size of 8.5" x 11"
  • 2063 sheets are a result of the 'Trim Press Sheets to Finished Size' process
  • And finally, 2063 8.5" x 11" sheets (with Waste taken into consideration) are folded down to 8.5" x 3.66"
  • This results in 2000 brochures with a finished size of 8.5" x 3.66"
